History

In 1921, two officers of Hamilton’s St. Andrew’s Benevolent Society were in conversation. John C. Munro, Secretary of the Society and John S. Drysdale, its Vice-President had the idea of forming a Lodge with the name “St. Andrew”. Further conversations and meetings defined a designated meeting night and the decision to form the new lodge from masons who were members of St. Andrew’s Benevolent Society.

St. Andrew’s Lodge #593 became a reality when it was instituted December 28^th 1921 in the Scottish Rite Room of the Masonic Hall on James Street North, Hamilton. There were forty-one charter members. The first Worshipful Master was W. Bro. Donald Munro and W. Bro. Fredrick William Davidson was the first Secretary.

The first meeting was January 25^th 1922 and St. Andrew’s initiated their first candidate, Hector D. Munro, the Junior Warden’s son. That evening there was a toast to the memory of the Immortal Bard, Robbie Burns – a fitting tribute from a lodge named St. Andrew’s.

As the lodge grew in size, groups and activities were many — a glee club, an orchestra, a baseball team, as well as annual outings and special evenings. One very important special evening and one, which was in keeping with the St. Andrew’s Scottish roots, was an evening to honour Robbie Burns. That toast to the Bard on January of 1922, marked the beginning of St. Andrews’ Annual Burns’ Night, a tradition honoured every year since – a venue to celebrate and hear the skirl o’ the pipes.

St. Andrew’s met at the James Street Temple from its beginning in 1921, until the Temple was destroyed by fire September 20^th 1968. St. Andrew’s then found an interim home at Valley Lodge No. 100 Dundas, until the Central Masonic Temple on Main Street East was completed in 1976. Here St. Andrew’s continued to meet on the traditional “fourth Wednesday”, until Central Masonic Temple was sold and they moved to their current location at the Scottish Rite.

The Lodge has been linked to Zeta Lodge No. 410 in Toronto since 1923 and Millennium Lodge No. 1179, Williamsville NY (previously Occidental No. 766, Buffalo), since 1928.
