HISTORY of BATTLEFIELD LODGE NO. 714

DURING THE YEAR 1963, MEMBERS OF THE STELCO “M” CLUB DISCUSSED THE IDEA OF STARTING A NEW MASONIC LODGE IN HAMILTON. THE STELCO “M” CLUB CONSISTED OF APPROXIMATELY 600 MEMBERS FROM VARIOUS AREA LODGES, WHO AT THE TIME OF JOINING THE CLUB WERE ALL EMPLOYEES OF THE STEEL COMPANY OF CANADA LTD.

NOT BEING MEN OF IDLE TALK, A COMMITTEE WAS FORMED CONSISTING OF THE FOLLOWING BRETHREN: -

21st SEPT. 1964, BATTLEFIELD LODGE U.D. INITIATED ITS FIRST CANDIDATE, Mr. WILLIAM GRUNDY. DURING OUR 1ST YEAR, WHILE UNDER DISPENSATION, THE LODGE INITIATED MR. ROBERT SHOWKENIK AND ACCEPTED THE APPLICATION FOR AFFILIATION FROM BRO. TED MILLS, THE FIRST MEMBER WHO WAS NOT A MEMBER OF THE STELCO “M” CLUB. R.W. BRO. JACK PIERCY, ON BEHALF OF W. BRO. ALEXANDER AND HIMSELF PRESENTED A SET OF THREE GAVELS TO THE LODGE. W. BRO. WALKER PRESENTED A PAIR OF DEACON’S WANDS AND A SET OF MOVEABLE JEWELS, ON BEHALF OF THE GOOSE AND GRIDDLE CLUB. W. BRO. N. SIMMS AND BRO. C. ROBINSON PRESENTED THE LODGE WITH A SET OF WORKING TOOLS IN A BEAUTIFUL CASE MADE BY THESE TWO BRETHREN

27th SEPT. 1965, AN EMERGENT MEETING WAS CALLED FOR THE CONSECRATION OF BATTLEFIELD LODGE U.D., WITH M.W. BRO. TRELEAVON P.G.M. OFFICIATING. WE NOW BECAME BATTLEFIELD LODGE NO.714, ON THE REGISTER OF THE GRAND LODGE OF CANADA IN THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO. W. BRO. T. MARSHALL PRESENTED THE LODGE WITH 17 BOOKS TO STAR OUR OWN MASONIC LIBRARY.

18th OCT. 1965, R.W. BRO. F.W. HYDER, D.D.G.M., ACCOMPANIED BY A LARGE NUMBER OF G.L. OFFICERS, OFFICIALLY INSTALLED THE SAME OFFICERS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE CHAIRS. AT THIS TIME WE ALSO RECEIVED OUR FIRST INVITATION TO VISIT ANOTHER LODGE, FROM THE T.H. SIMPSON LODGE, WHICH PROVED THE STAR OF A LONG LASTING FRATERNAL FRIENDSHIP.

15th NOV. 1965, BRO. JACK. PENTNEY HEADED A DELEGATION FROM THE STELCO “M” CLUB, AND PRESENTED TO THE LODGE AN OFFICIAL SEAL OF BATTLEFIELD LODGE NO. 714 G.R.C.. BRO. NORM BUIST PRESENTED TO THE LODGE ON BEHALF OF HIS WIFE LYLIE AND HIMSELF, A BEAUTIFUL ALTER COPY OF THE V.O.T.S.L.. BRO. EVERETT GRAHAM PRESENTED TO THE LODGE ON BEHALF OF HIS WIFE MARGUERITE AND HIMSELF, THREE BIBLE MARKERS IN THE RESPECTIVE DEGREES. THE BY-LAWS OF BATTLEFIELD LODGE NO. 714 G.R.C. WERE PRESENTED BY R.W. BRO. PIERCY, REGULARLY PASSED AND DECLARED ADOPTED.

17th JAN. 1966, W. BRO. CLAYTON MALCHOW WAS INSTALLED AS THE W.M., W. BRO. G.E. OSWALD BEING THE INSTALLING MASTER. THE DEDICATION AND UNTIRING EFFORTS OF W. BRO. SANDY GRIFFIN WERE ACKNOWLEDGED AND A TOKEN GIFT OF APPRECIATION PRESENTED TO HIM. DURING 1996, CONGRATULATIONS WERE EXTENDED TO THE NEW D.D.G.M. FOR DISTRICT “B”, R.W. BRO. E. HEAL, A CHARTER MEMBER OF BATTLEFIELD LODGE. WARDROPE LODGE NO. 555, PRESENTED BATTLEFIELD LODGE WITH A UNION JACK FLAG, WHICH HAD GIVEN MANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO WARDROPE LODGE.

16th JAN. 1967, W. BRO. GLEN HANSON, AS INSTALLING MASTER CARRIED OUT HIS DUTIES BY INSTALLING W. BRO. MARTY BIRHELMER IN THE CHAIR OF KING SOLOMON.  

15th JAN. 1968, ANOTHER FIRST FOR BATTLEFIELD, DUE TO A SEVERE SNOWSTORM THE REGULAR MEETING AND INSTALLATION HAD TO BE RESCHEDULED TO THE 29th.JAN.. WHEN W. BRO. SANDY GRIFFIN INSTALLED BRO. JOHN GIGLIA AS WORSHIPFUL MASTER. DURING SUMMER CALL-0FF 1968, THREE OF OUR CHARTERED MEMBERS PASSED TO THE GRAND LODGE ABOVE:- W. BROS. G. HANSON, SECRETARY, T. MARSHALL AND H. SPRINGER. OUR NEWLY APPOINTED GRAND D of C., V.W. BRO. SANDY GRIFFIN, STEPPED IN RIGHT AWAY TO TAKE OVER THE SECRETARY’S DUTIES. THE MASONIC HALL ON JAMES ST.N. WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE AND MANY LODGES LOST FURNITURE AND REGALIA.

6th APRIL 1970, BATTLEFIELD HOSTED A MEETING OF THE THREE THIRD MONDAY NIGHT LODGES, AND WELCOMED DORIC AND BRANT LODGE OFFICERS AND BRETHREN.

19th OCT. 1970, R.W. BRO. FRED SCOTT LED A LARGE DELEGATION OF ROYAL ARCH MASONS, WHO THEN RAISED BRO. TOM IRVINE TO THE THIRD DEGREE

18th JAN. 1971, THE INSTALLATION AND INVESTITURE OF THE OFFICERS WAS CONDUCTED BY W. BRO. MARTY BIRHELMER, WITH BRO. HOWARD MULHEIISEN BEING INSTALLED AS MASTER. OUR NEWLY INVESTED J.W., BRO. TED MILLS THEN PRESENTED TWO WARDENS COLUMNS TO THE LODGE IN MEMORY OF BRO. GORDON GREY.

15th JAN. 1973, W. BRO. HOWARD MULHEISEN HAD THE PLEASURE TO INSTALL BRO. TED MILLS, THE FIRST WORSHIPFUL MASTER WHO WAS NOT A CHARTER MEMBER.

26th APRIL 1973, W. BRO. MILLS LED A FINE DELEGATION FROM BATTLEFIELD LODGE TO OAKVILLE, TO INITIATE THE ANNUAL SPRING AND FALL EXCHANGE OF FRATERNAL VISITS WITH TRAFALGAR LODGE NO. 712.

21st JAN. 1974, W. BRO. MARTY BIRHELMER ON HIS SECOND SUCH HONOUR AS INSTALLING MASTER, INSTALLED BRO. DON COTTTINGHAM AS MASTER. BRO. EV GRAHAM, OUR RETIRING CHAPLAIN, WAS PRESENTED WITH A TRAVELING CASE AS A TOKEN OF GRATITUDE FOR HIS 10 YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE, DURING WHICH TIME HE HAD NOT MISSED A SINGLE MEETING. OUR BRO. NORM BUIST HAD TO GO INTO HOSPITAL, FOR THE FIRST OF TWO HIP REPLACEMENTS AND OTHER PARS, WHICH IN THE FUTURE WOULD MAKE HIM BATTLEFIELD’S FIRST BIONIC W.M.

16th SEPT. 1974, A VISIT BY THE SIX NATIONS INDIAN DEGREE TEAM, FROM SCOTLAND LODGE, IN FULL INDIAN DRESS PROVED A VERY COLOURFUL AND ENJOYABLE EVENING. AMONG THE MANY VISITORS WAS R.W. BRO. ANFIELD, PAST DISTRICT GRAND MASTER OF ZAMBIA, AND AN HONORARY G.S.W. OF SCOTLAND AND SOUTH AFRICA. W. BRO. SHAVAK MADON, W.M. OF TRAFALGAR LODGE NO. 712 WITH A DELEGATION OF HIS OFFICERS AND BRETHREN.

20th JAN. 1975, BRO. ROY HENDERSON, MASTER ELECT, SINCE OUR S.W., BRO. NORM BUIST HAD REQUESTED TO REMAIN IN HIS CHAIR ANOTHER YEAR FOR HEALTH REASONS, INTRODUCED W. BRO. JIM LORRIE, UNION LODGE, AS THE INSTALLING MASTER.

24th FEB. 1975, W. BRO. HENDERSON WELCOMED THE NEWLY FORMED “ULSTER CANADIAN SQUARE CLUB”, LED BY W. BRO. RANKIN BOYD, TO INITIATE INTO BATTLEFIELD LODGE MR. ROD BEATTIE AND MR. ALEX CREE.

15th SEPT. 1975, ON THE OCCASION OF OUR 10th ANNIVERSARY, V.W. BRO. SANDY GRIFFIIN ASSUMED THE CHAIR AND ASSISTED BY MOST OF HIS ORIGINAL OFFICERS PASSED BRO. A. HARKNESS TO THE 2nd DEGREE. W. BRO. JACK PENTNEY GAVE A SHORT TALK ON THE FOUNDING AND PROGRESS OF BATTLEFIELD LODGE.

20th OCT. 1975, THE W.M. EXPRESSED THE THANKS OF THE LODGE TO BRO. GEORGE THOMSON, AND HIS COMMITTEE FOR THE EXCELLENT NIGHT TO CELEBRATE OUR 10th ANNIVERSARY. W.M. STATED THE LODGE’S INTENT TO HOLD A LADIES NIGHT ANNUALLY AND HE ALSO WELCOMED TRAFALGAR LODGE ON THEIR ANNUAL FRATERNAL VISIT.

21st JUNE 1976, THIS BEING A FAMILY NIGHT, THE LADIES WERE ENTERTAINED IN THE BANQUET ROOM DURING THE BUSINESS MEETING, THEN WELCOMED INTO THE LODGE ROOM. W. BRO. JACK PENTNEY GAVE AN INFORMATIVE TALK ON THE DUTIES OF THE OFFICERS OF THE LODGE AND THEIR RESPECTIVE CHAIRS, W. BRO. NORM BUIST GAVE AN EXCELLENT PRESENTATION OF THE FINAL CHARGE IN THE FIRST DEGREE AND THE ALL RETIRED TO THE BANQUET ROOM FOR REFRESHMENTS AND ENTERTAINMENT.

20th DEC. 1976, A LETTER FROM BRO. JIM LOMAX, ALIAS HAMILTON’S SANTA CLAUS, OUTLINING HIS FUTURE PLANS AND THE ASSISTANCE HE WOULD REQUIRE TO ACCOMPLISH HIS GOAL.

21st MAR. 1977, BRO. DAVID TURNER WELCOMED BACK AFTER HIS SERIOUS HEAR ATTACK, INVESTED AND TOOK HIS CHAIR AS J.W.. THE HAMILTON FIREFIGHTER’S DEGREE TEAM, LED BY W. BRO. CASSIDY AND INCLUDING BRO. LEN SALTMARSH, FIRECHIEF, THEN CONDUCTED THE INITIATION OF MR. GLEN GUY PEACE INTO BATTLEFIELD LODGE.

16th MAY 1977, W. BRO. MARTY BIRHELMER LED A DEGREE TEAM OF JUNIOR OFFICERS AND YOUNG MEMBERS IN PERFORMING AN EXCELLENT 1st DEGREE.

20th MAR. 1978, MOTION WAS PASSED THAT WE CHANGE OUR ELECTION AND INSTALLATION DATES BY ADVANCING THEM TWO MONTHS TO AVOID THE BAD WEATHER, MOST RECENTLY EXPERIENCED IN JANUARY 1978.

18th SEPT. 1978, REPORTED THAT OUR BY-LAW CHANGES HAD BEEN APPROVED BY GRAND LODGE, AND THAT PROJECT HELP WAS NOW UNDERWAY. A NEW SETTING MAUL WAS PRESENTED TO THE LODGE BY BRO. JIM WHITE ON BEHALF OF THE W.M. OF AVONIEL LODGE NO.774, BELFAST, NORHERN IRELAND.

18th  DEC. 1978, AS INSTALLING MASTER , W. BRO. HAROLD PROWSE INSTALLED BRO. DAVID TURNER AS MASTER, THE FIRST AND ONLY TIME OUR INSTALLATION WOULD TAKE PLACE IN DECEMBER.

16th  APR. 1979, W. BRO. TURNER EXTENDED CONGRATULATIONS ON BEHALF OF THE LODGE TO BRO. BILL WRIGHT, THE LODGE CHAIRMAN OF THE G.L. PROJECT H.E.L.P..

17th SEPT. 1979, THIS ANNUAL VISIT BY TRAFALGAR LODGE NO. 712 WAS A PARTICULAR DELIGHT AS R.W. BRO. HERB SHROEDER WAS PRESENT NOT ONLY AS A P.M. OF TRAFALGAR LODGE BUT AS THE CURRENT D.D.G.M. FOR DISTRICT “A”.

19th NOV. 1979, W. BRO. MARTY BIRHELMER INSTALLED BRO. BILL MAYNARD AS THE W.M., THIS BEING THE FIRST TIME OUR INSTALLATION WAS HELD IN NOVEMBER, ANOTHER FIRST, WHICH PROVED VERY POPULAR, WAS THE EARLY SUPPER AT 6:30 pm.

18th FEB. 1980, ON THIS THE OFFICIAL VISIT OF OUR D.D.G.M. R.W. BRO. VICTOR LEPP, IT WAS AN EXTRA PLEASURE FOR W.BRO. MAYNARD TO WELCOME W.BRO. MARV WATERMAN AND 18 OF HIS BRETHREN FROM IRONDIQUOIT LODGE NO. 301. THIS WAS TO PROVE THE FIRST STEP TO SETTING UP FRATERNAL VISITS ANNUALLY BETWEEN IRONDIQUOIT AND BATTLEFIELD.

15th SEPT. 1980, THIS WAS THE ANNUAL STEP-UP NIGHT FOR THE OFFICERS AND BRO. DAVID PATTERSON LED THE WK OF THE EVENING. IT WAS THEN HIS PLEASURE TO WELCOME R.W. BRO. ROY S. HENDERSON, THE NEW D.D.G.M. FOR HAMILTON DISTRICT “B” AND BATTLEFIELD LODGE’S FIRST D.D.G.M.

17th NOV. 1980, BRO.DAVID  PATTERSON WAS INSTALLED AS W.M., BY W. BRO. NORM BOLES AND P.M.’S OF BATTLEFIELD AND OTHER LODGES IN THE THREE DISTRICTS, WITH THE IMPRESSIVE NUMBER OF 169 BRETHREN PRESENT. W. BRO. GEORGE THOMSON REPORTED ON A VERY ENJOYABLE VISIT TO IRONDIQUOIT LODGE NO.301, DUNKIRK, N.Y. WHICH INCLUDED THE PRESENTATION OF A CANADIAN FLAG. THANKS WERE EXTENDED BY THE LODGE TO W. BRO. THOMSON FOR HIS EFFORTS IN ARRANGING THIS FIRST ANNUAL FRATERNAL VISIT. A VERY ENJOYABLE TIME HELD DOWNSTAIRS IN OUR BANQUET HALL AS FOR THE FIRST TIME IT WAS PERMISSIBLE TO SERVE ALCOHOLIC REFRESHMENTS ON SPECIAL OCCASIONS.

16th FEB. 1981, BATTLEFIELD LODGE TOOK GREAT PLEASURE AND PRIDE IN WELCOMING THE D.D.G.M., R.W. BRO. ROY S. HENDERSON INTO HIS MOTHER LODGE ON HIS OFFICIAL VISIT.

27th APR. 1981, W. BRO. PATTERSON AND HIS OFFICERS ARRANGED A SPECIAL FAMILY NIGHT WITH 125 IN ATTENDANCE. EVERYONE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THE 18th CENTURY DEGREE, PORTRAYED BY A GROUP OF MASONS FROM THE GUELPH AREA, IN PERIOD COSTUME.

13th JUNE 1981, THE FIRST OFFICIAL FRATERNAL VISIT OF IRONDIQUOIT LODGE NO. 301, DUNKIRK, N.Y., HEADED BY W. BRO. FRED HUDSON. AMONG THE VISITORS WERE R.W. BRO. PAUL CAVE I.P.D.D.G.M., AND R.W. BRO. RAYMOND OGDEN I.P.G. SECT. OF THE G.L. OF N.Y.. AFTER THE DEGREE WK THERE WAS A PRESENTATION OF THE AMERICAN FLAG TO BATTLEFIELD LODGE, AND W. BRO. MAYNARD PRESENTED A MAPLE LEAF TO ADORN THE CANADIAN FLAG PREVIOUSLY GIVEN TO IRONDIQUOIT LODGE. BRO. ROBERT McCUTCHEON, CHAPLAIN OF BATTLEFIELD LODGE LED A VERY SINCERE AND MOVING DEDICATION OF THE AMERICAN FLAG INTO SERVICE IN BATTLEFIELD LODGE. THANKS TO THE EFFORTS OF W. BRO. GEORGE THOMSON AND HIS WIFE BARBARA, EVERYONE ENJOYED A GREAT SOCIAL EVENING WITH ENTERTAINMENT PROVIDED BY THE “WORLD FAMOUS CLAWHAMMERS.”

21st SEPT. 1981, W. BRO. PATTERSON, ON BEHALF OF THE LODGE, PRESENTED V.W. BRO. HAROLD PROWSE WITH THE REGALIA OF A GRAND STEWARD, HIS APPOINTMENT FOR HAVING SERVED AS DISTRICT SECRETARY TO R.W. BRO. ROY S. HENDERSON.

16th  NOV. 1981, S.W. BRO. ALEX CREE INFORMED THE LODGE THAT A BENEFIT DANCE TO AID THE ROY FAMILY WOULD BE HELD IN DOFASCO HALL ON JAN.30th 1982. W. BRO. GEORGE THOMSON ASSUMED THE CHAIR AND PROCEEDED WITH THE INSTALLATION OF BRO. ALEX CREE AS W.M. AND THE INVESTITURE OF THE OFFICERS FOR 1982. W. BRO. BILL KANE PRESENTED A FAMILY MASONIC BIBLE TO W. BRO. CREE ON BEHALF OF HIS AUNT AND UNCLE, BRO.AND MRS. ROBERT McCUTCHEON.

7th  DEC. 1981, W. BRO. ALEX CREE EXPRESSED HIS GREAT PLEASURE THAT HIS FIRST MEETING AS W.M., SHOULD BE SUCH A HISTORIC OCCASION FOR BATTLEFIELD LODGE. M.W. BRO. ERIC W. NANCEKIVELL, P.G.M., R.W. BRO. CLARK BROOKS D.D.G.M. AND MANY PAST AND PRESENT G.L. OFFICERS WERE IN ATTENDANCE FOR THE PRESENTATION OF THE WILLIAM MERCER WILSON MEDAL TO OUR OWN BRO. EVERETT GRAHAM. R.W. BRO. NORMAN E. BRYNE GAVE A TALK ON THE W.M.W. MEDAL AND HOW IT WAS AWARDED, WHICH WAS VERY FITTING AS NORM’S DAD HAD ALSO BEEN A RECIPIENT OF THE HONOUR.

18th FEB. 1982, R.W. BRO. CLARK BROOKS MADE HIS OFFICIAL VISIT TO BATTLEFIELD AND WAS VERY COMPLIMENTARY ON OUR LISA ROY PROJECT. THIS PROJECT WAS SO SUCCESSFUL THAT AFTER PAYING APPROXIMATELY $4,000 IN MEDICAL BILLS FOR LISA, THE REMAINING $4,000 WAS USED TO STAR THE “BATTLEFIELD LODGE SPECIAL BENEVOLENT FUND” FOR FUTURE BENEVOLENT WK IN OUR COMMUNITY.

19th APR. 1982, W. BRO. TED MILLS ASSUMED THE CHAIR OF KING SOLOMON FOR THE INITIATION OF HIS SON ROD.

17th MAY 1982, W. BRO. CHARLIE CRAWFORD ASSUMED THE CHAIR FOR THE RAISING OF HIS SON CARL TO THE THIRD DEGREE.

14th JUNE 1982, W. BRO. CREE LED A DELEGATION OF BATTLEFIELD BRETHREN ON OUR FIRST BI-ANNUAL VISIT TO IRONDIQUOIT LODGE NO. 301, DUNKIRK, N.Y.. A VERY ENJOYABLE WEEK-END WAS HIGHLIGHTED BY THE PRESENTATION OF A TRAVELING GAVEL AND BASE BY W. BRO.’S GEORGE THOMSON AND MARV WATERMAN, TO WHOM ALL CREDIT IS DUE FOR THIS FRATERNAL RELATIONSHIP.

JULY 1982, BATTLEFIELD LODGE WERE RECOGNIZED IN THE GRAND LODGE LODGE PROCEEDINGS, WHEN R.W. BRO. ROD CONNER USED OUR LISA ROY PROJECT AS AN EXAMPLE OF MASONRY IN ACTION.

OF UNION LODGE NO. 7, THE ACCOMPANYING LODGE TO THE D.D.G.M., AND A DELEGATION OF HIS OFFICERS AND BRETHREN WERE INTRODUCED.  R. W. BRO. ED STANDISH, D.D.G.M. DISTRICT “B” WAS PRESENTED ON HIS OFFICIAL VISIT, ACCOMPANIED BY R. W. BRO. ED RAMSBOTTOM, D.D.G.M. DISTRICT “A”. 28th MAY 2001, IT WAS A GREAT PLEASURE TO HAVE R. W. BRO. BOB KERR WITH US AGAIN ON AN UNOFFICIAL VISIT. W. BRO. RAY CROFT AS AGAIN WELCOMED AND THIS TIME THE LODGE WAS INFORMED THAT HE HAD BEEN APPROVED FOR APPOINTMENT AS GRAND STANDARD BEARER OF THE GRAND LODGE OF ENGLAND, TO BE INVESTED IN SEPTEMBER, MOST SINCERE CONGRATULATIONS WERE EXTENDED. THERE WAS NO DEGREE WORK, BUT THE MEETING WAS VERY IMPORTANT AS W. BRO. STEWART ALEXANDER ASSUMED THE CHAIR AND CONDUCTED AN OPEN FORUM FOR DISCUSSION AND SUGGESTIONS TO IMPROVE THE SERIOUS PROBLEMS OF POOR ATTENDANCE AND APPARENT LACK OF INTEREST IN THE LODGE.
